Currently the U.S. devotes nearly 180,000,000 acres to growing corn and soy, the lion's share of which goes to feeding livestock. Those acres are effectively dead, the plant growth on them depends on crude oil, to fuel the tilling , harvest, and distribution, not to mention the fertilizers and poisons that make the crops possible. Eating the end product of this crime against the planet is just stupid, self-harming behavior. If we can figure out how to reverse this assault, to bring those lands back to life, we will need ungulates on them to serve the natural cycle but eating the meat in our stores just perpetuates the damage. If shame would change this I would use shame, we probably need education and high prices.
