I told him, “White violence has long been visited upon the neighborhood surrounding the church via gentrification — these deaths are just the culmination of all the efforts to bleach the neighborhood, ridding it of all the Black folk whose lives were inextricably linked to it” (needless to say, that quote was never used). From the redlining that denied them mortgages in the post war suburbs, from the denial of GI bill benefits after their service in WWII and Korea, from the knowledge a kid gets when they see the difference between their public school and the one on "the other side of the freeway", the knowledge that in the eyes of the state their lives don't matter...
