"Gold was accepted everywhere"? Pretty broad claim. Today dollars are accepted almost everywhere and gold almost nowhere. The failure in logic was the hypothesis that dollars are only a commodity in Europe. If businesses and individuals will in fact accept them as currency then they are in fact, currency. Gold is not and I doubt it ever will be again. Now Euros, probably can't use them easily anywhere outside of the EU, haven't tried and don't know. I do know that Canadians are only too willing to take greenbacks;)
