I am reminded of this reality on a monthly basis. I take care of my dad, a WWII rifle platoon leader in the Italy campaign. To this day (he’s 97) he hates war, is still suffering from the moral and psychic injuries he sustained in his three months of combat. The screaming nightmares tailed off after about age 90. His combat was probably in the “Band of Brothers” vein, and the fact that they fought in a necessary war to defeat true evil did not diminish the harm done to him when he ordered a kid to take a position that cost a limb or a life. He has hotly said, “Nobody has the right to ask a veteran whether he has killed in battle”, I have never asked and I’m pretty certain of the answer.
