I don't pretend to believe anything at all. There are things I think are true, things I think are false, and things I'm not at all sure of. You have every right to say what you please, within the strictures of law. I have every right to ignore you...perfect balance, yin and yang;)
In a perfect world every human life would have some degree of value, our world is so very far from perfect. I don't think that human life is MORE valuable than say whale life or ant life. Without ants most life on earth would be in serious trouble, on the other hand without humanity most life on earth would do just fine. Society has decided that we may not kill infants. This seems wise to me in most cases. Society has NOT said that we may not kill fetuses, again this seems wise to me.
You can't and you won't dictate what my duty entails...what a silly thought. Duty is entirely personal, each person has to decide for themselves where their duty lies.
Some people believe that there is only one standard of morality. This seems to me to be a foolish belief. To me, teaching a child that masturbation is "a disordered act", as the Catholic church does, is the height of immorality. They obviously disagree. Who, in your opinion, has the right to impose their moral standard on the other?
Why do states enforce rights? Pretty simple, rights don't exist without state enforcement. People blather on about "god given rights" but there is no supernatural force or being that will step in to defend what you see as your rights when you think they have been violated...only the state can and will do that.
I determine my values through careful thought and consideration. I could hardly care less what other people told me when I was young or what they tell me now. I'm the only one who has to live with my conscience, I'm the person who knows most truly how I have acted, and so my values are more important to me than to any other person.
If you can show me an "objective value" that affects, or should affect my values then I will consider it...who knows, I might even agree;)
