I live in the Salt Lake City valley, in which "podium style" multi-family, multi story buildings are popping up like mushrooms after a spring rain. These intentionally cluster around our light rail, major street level arterials, and dispersed city centers that have become popular as walkable and hip neighborhoods. Often the tall and square front apartment and condo units displace the street level small businesses that attracted the young and hip in the first place, and of course the rents and sales prices are high, mostly because there is a huge housing shortage in this economically vibrant valley. How to not kill the goose laying the golden eggs? A challenge. Love your introduction of fractal aesthetics to the discussion. The major feature of fractal geometry is the apparently random placement that creates a larger beautiful pattern. Trees, for example, are perceived as beautiful because of their systematic but random branching and spacing. Hard to achieve in planned built spaces;)
