I think you leave an entire important calculation out here. People, male and female, want partners that are perceived as attractive enough to confirm their own worth. It’s very easy to see the flaws in a guy if you know your friends or mom will say, “you can do better than that, dear”. And the opposite holds true as well, so easy to overlook warning signals when others are checking your guy (or gal) out with jealousy.
