Meghan, I know the feeling of losing both a beloved dog and parent in a short span of time. Dogs, for all their mess and maintenance, are usually just easier to love than parents. We place such expectations on parents, we’re so easily disappointed when they seem to let us down, when they prove to be human. Our dogs just love us without expectations, other than for their daily walks and treats. I was fortunate in a couple of ways when I lost Max (he’s the chocolate), I had Bo by my side and the knowledge that Max had lived a full happy, passionate life. And dealing with Max’s death prepared me for my Mom’s a month and a half later. The grief was very different for me though, for Max it was intense and short lived, for my Mom it has been muted and long lasting; after a year and a half I still find myself thinking I will call her to celebrate or commiserate over some life event. All my sympathies and hoping you will be in a situation to welcome another furry friend soon.
