Nice piece, makes me want to write one about short prejudice. Fat people have their 12 conventional roles, short men have about three or four. There’s the pushy short guy annoying the attractive woman, there’s the short dweeb who is “shorthand” for an ineffectual guy, there’s the troll like Louis DePalma in Taxi. We have done better in the romance department, if only slightly. Richard Dreyfus has been Elliot in The Goodbye Girl (’77), Paul in The Competition (‘80), and Chris in Stakeout (‘87). Michael J. Fox had Doc Hollywood and at least a girlfriend in the Back to the Future series. But short guys like Robert Redford and Tom Cruise usually stand on “apple boxes” and play against short women wearing “flats”. Oh yeah, can’t leave out Billy Crystal in When Harry met Sally, and if I’m not mistaken she is wearing flats and an evening dress in the climatic last New Years Eve scene;)
