Not really. Your hypothesis is that early farming was sedentary and intense enough to exhaust the soil...which would make it agriculture, which process is pretty well documented. The real question is what new technological/cultural wrinkle allowed people to settle down and farm intensively enough to exhaust the soils in the first place. That change would be the one that "invented" agriculture;)
