Our gender roles and expectations are deeply engrained by a lifetime of media, stories, entertainment, and of course our casual conversations, usually within the genders. Women have been trained to rely on each other, to expect emotional sensitivity from other women, the way that men have been taught to compete and to stoically swallow their emotions. Violating these subconscious norms often comes with a social penalty, for men and women, a tough knot to untie.
