Sure they would have;) It didn’t “just so happen”, that environment was unique and a product of public investment. “The market” isn’t an enthusiastic investor in basic science, tech innovation, human capital, “the market” likes Twinkies and Coca Cola. The IT “market” giants like IBM and Zerox dismissed the concept of personal computing, it took rebellious and well educated kids, kids with engineer dads who gathered to work on military and aerospace projects (Moon shots they were called;) to innovate, to see and pursue the allure of personal computing from which the IT revolution sprung. You’re welcome to your magical beliefs, thankfully they’re not widely shared.
