Thanks for the recommendation! Definitely goes on my reading list. Malcolm has been a hero for me since I read the Haley work in high school (class of '69). I immediately suspected when the TV drama Roots came out that Malcolm had been the source for Haley's search, something not discussed at the time. It struck me then how quickly the searing scenes of brutality and stolen life morphed in the U.S. consciousness into the less dangerous area of searching out family roots. The country wasn't ready to deal with our crime against humanity then, maybe more so now, but it seems we (white America) are still far from honesty on the history that divides us.
