The free market is a very different thing than a gift economy. The market functions irrespective of gifts and reciprocity. You don't have the bucks, the seller doesn't "give" you the product. For most of human history people lived in small, bonded, lifelong groups and reciprocity made powerful economic sense. Every member could count on future returns of favors, could share bounty that could not be individually consumed knowing that similar sharing would be returned in the future.

The free market, on the other hand, cancels debts upon transactions, goods and currency balance and no future relationship is implied or required.

One system is the basis of life long relationships, the other is the basis of anonymous and/or transient relationships.
