The Hamas attack was structured to provoke an extreme Israeli military response. There's no military advantage to be gained from attacking civilians, committing atrocities against civilians, kidnapping civilians, nor did Hamas seize and hold Israeli territory.

They simply desired to destroy the growing alliance between Israel and the Saudis and regional Arabs, an alliance that ignored Palestinian ambitions and conceded control in Gaza and the West Bank to Israel.

So far they can say, "mission accomplished".
