The science and public health response to the pandemic was nothing short of spectacular, the shortfall was in political leadership. Had the U.S. not been gaslighted by a sociopathic president, had the citizens worn their masks and gotten their vaccinations, which were miraculous in efficacy and speed of production and distribution, many hundreds of thousands would still be alive, the economy would have taken a much smaller hit. The tragedy was in leadership.
