There are ample examples around the world of multi-party states that exist in perpetual paralysis, Israel, Italy, the United Kingdom come to mind. The two party "system" here does reflect broad ideological realities, and the establishment of a viable party on either side of the divide usually harm's that side's prospects to advance their agenda. Ralph Nader and the Green Party come to mind. His campaign sunk Al Gore's chances and gave the country the Roberts Court and eventually a 6/3 conservative split in the SCOTUS, as well as the war in Iraq, Citizens United, the gutting of the Voting Rights Act, years of inaction on climate change, and the laissez faire deregulation in the financial sector which led to the great recession.
