There's nothing wrong with lying to your mom if the truth is hurtful. Deflection can be more honest but takes planning and creativity.

When my dad thought I was his dad, or remembered his wife as his mother I mostly went along with him. Pointing out that he had these basic facts wrong just embarrassed or angered him. This is so difficult at times, do what works and forgive yourself for the frustration and negative feelings that will come up.
