This is the crux of the matter, and ignorant public opinion isn't going away, any more than is government pandering to public ignorance and prejudice. I'm totally on board with the swift development of nuclear power with a couple of obvious caveats. We need robust grids that can withstand the increasing violent weather, and wildfire threats, not to mention the constant threat from our 40-90 million people living with seismic threat, and centralized generation/distribution is inherently fragile, for both technical and political reasons. Nuclear can serve as the lynch pin of future grids for fill in power but these sorts of investments will be too late for many poor countries who can improve life NOW with simple wind and solar tech, possibly forestalling the building of more cheap/dirty generation, and for politically gridlocked countries like the U.S. where one team is determined to block this kind of progress.
