But wherever you stand, we should remind ourselves that the only conceivable explanation for disagreement is cold-hearted, implacable bigotry. The needs of trans people and women should be thought of as a zero-sum game in which compassion for one requires hatred for the other. Anybody who uses the words “man” or “woman” in a way that doesn’t wholly affirm your point of view deserves all the bullying and harassment they get.
