This story is begging to be told on the screen, big screen or a streaming service like Netflix or HBO. We have an image of American heroes; usually they are recognized by the larger society, win medals, a parade. Far too many of our heroes however fought hopeless battles against the powers and attitudes they faced, battles they knew must end badly, battles they fought anyway.
