“Tiffany style” glass relied on, was made possible by the copper foil technique. Prior glass pieces used lead “came”, an H shaped lead extrusion where the glass pieces fit into the back to back channels and the pieces of came were soldered together at the joints where they met. With the foil technique the pieces are cut to fit together fairly tightly and then the artist wraps their edges with 1/4 inch wide copper foil which has a similar thickness to tin foil. The foil covers 1/16 or so of the faces of the glass pieces and the butted edges of the pieces. The artist then brushes the joints with liquid flux and solders them together, forming a very fine sort of “came” and allowing much more intricate work. All “Tiffany style” lamps are made by this process, as is the humming bird piece I showed.
