Too simplistic. Frederick will tell you that Earth is NOT a zero-sum game...energy is being added every day from the sun, including the fossil fuels whose use is now poisoning the planet and juicing the greenhouse effect.

That energy was collected many millions of years ago, the sun was the source. Not sure what you mean by "pure profit". Profit is an incentive that drives capital formation and risk taking. We could argue that we would all be better off without modern technology, if we never talked to remote strangers on forums like this, if we used muscle power and locally grown resources and materials to satisfy our daily needs.

Of course, many, if not most of us would never have been born, those living would spend their days in demanding labor and facing periodic trying shortages...easy to make an argument that this kind of life would be more fulfilling in the long run.

The profit motive, in one form or another, creates the homes we live in, the clothes we wear, the food we eat, the jobs we work, the technologies we employ and enjoy...not sure how any of these come to be in a world without commerce and profit;)
