When currencies are backed by scarce specie they fail to keep up with economic growth, leading to credit crunches and the failure of capital formation. Just look at the difficulty of Western development when dollars were tied to gold...the U.S. with vast natural resources was held captive by British bankers who had a stranglehold on "real" money.
