While I agree totally that the degree of wealth inequality in the country is toxic I think our analyses differ on one point. I don’t see this as a matter of fairness, I don’t really care what the degree of inequality is…so long as it works to benefit all Americans. I think it is obvious that our degree of inequality is stifling the Main St. economy, where most of us live, where I did business for over 4 decades. It’s easy to make a “fairness” argument against wealth redistribution downward to broaden wealth generally in society; the higher/high taxes necessary do constitute a form of government confiscation, which should always raise a red flag. But I’m much more interested in utility, what I see as the reality that in our economy large concentrations of wealth harm the functioning of that economy, harming the majority of the citizens. It’s only natural to want to keep that which is yours, and a dicey prospect to demonize people for that natural desire.
