While it can be comforting to think that you are part of a greater plan, that the grand forces of the universe are aware of you and attempting to guide you, there's next to no evidence that this might be true.
It can be a very hurtful belief for the many unwilling victims of random chance to think that their plight is somehow deserved, part of a plan, or a sign of their failure to receive the message the universe is sending them. It can be even more hurtful when they can see people all around them that are awash in good fortune though they seem to deserve none of it.
One Bible passage always appealed to me, though I am in no way religious or spiritual; "The race is not always to the swift nor the contest to the strong, nor yet bread to the wise nor riches to men of understanding, but time and chance happen to them all".
