You are naive. putin had just spent 9 years preparing to invade Ukriane and would simply have fallen back on his central lie, that Ukraine was ruled by Nazis and needed "de-Nazification". If putin had wanted simply to solidify his position in Donbas then he would have simply invaded Donbas. NATO posed and still poses NO threat to Russia.
